Fry, Susan, Burial in medieval Ireland 900–1500: a review of the written sources, Dublin: Four Courts Press, 1999.
abstract:
Despite the great amount of work done on burial in Ireland in recent decades, this is the first study of the written sources for burial in the British Isles. This wide-ranging study explores many diverse topics, including the social status of women, embalming, elite cemeteries, the spread of Christianity, and the social uses of the cemetery. While some of the practices discussed will certainly seem quite extraordinary to today's reader, the author supplies contemporary evidence from France and Great Britain proving that Ireland's burial customs closely (if not exactly) parallel those in medieval France and Great Britain.
